The GST Council increasing the mobile telephone taxation rate last month from 12 percent to 18 percent. The increased GST pressure on mobile telephones has now been introduced, meaning that the cost of telephones is also up. Manu Kumar Jain of Xiaomi India MD carried Twitter declaring an immediate rise in the company's telephone prices in India. The price rise is to be observed in the full portfolio of the business offered in India for Mi, Redmi and Poco-branded telephones.
In Jain's tweet, Xiaomi follows the rule that its hardware products are not profitable by more than 5 percent, but the rise in the GST rate left the company no option but to raise its telephone prices in India. We have contacted Xiaomi in relation to the price rise on all the phones it sells and when we hear it, we will update it.
As of today, Flipkart already reveals the improved pricing structure. The Poco X2, which previously cost Rs. 16,999 in 6 GB + 128 GB, has now applied for Rs. 17,999. The price of the 6 GB + 64 GB Redmi K20 variant was increased on Flipkart to Rs 2 000, while the Redmi K20 Pro price asking for its 6 GB + 128 GB variant also increased by the same margin.
The updated price of the aforementioned Xiaomi phones on Amazon was not available because they are classified on the website as "currently unavailable." We will soon be more clearly on the official website of Xiaomi India as the latest price structure is soon to come live. The website of Xiaomi will also represent the changes when this story is written. We also expect that rival smartphone manufacturers will soon announce a revised pricing structure.
